Jennie Wai Yee (Fung) Lin was born in Hong Kong on December 2, 1931, the eldest of three surviving children. She was deeply loved by her parents—her father, a buyer for the Sincere Corporation, and her mother, a homemaker. It was her father who introduced the family to the Christian faith, a foundation that would guide Jennie throughout her life.
When World War II reached Hong Kong, Jennie was 10 years old. She and her family returned to mainland China for safety during the war years, where she delighted in rural life and often played with local animals. Around age 14, she returned to Hong Kong to continue her schooling. After graduating from high school, she earned a bookkeeping degree from the Hong Kong Technical College.
In 1956, Jennie married David Lin in Hong Kong. Soon after, she left her birthplace aboard the S.S. Cleveland, traveling with her mother-in-law through Honolulu and San Francisco before settling in New York. David, who had studied naval architecture at the University of Michigan, found work in Manhattan, and the couple first lived on 170th Street. Jennie enrolled in English as a Second Language classes, eventually becoming fluent enough to help her children with their homework. The family later moved to the Bronx, where they raised three children—Jangie, Angie, and Daniel—in a multigenerational household shared with David’s parents.
Jennie was instrumental in bringing her family to the United States. Her youngest brother, Leo, arrived in 1964, followed by her other brother, Lionel, in 1967. Her own parents immigrated in 1966. Just three years later, in early 1969, her mother passed away unexpectedly after a short illness. Her father settled nearby and frequently joined the family for meals, maintaining close ties with his daughter and grandchildren.
Jennie and David shared 30 years of marriage until David’s passing in February 1987. A devoted wife and mother, Jennie tended the family garden, sewed, knitted, crocheted, and faithfully oversaw her children’s music practice. She was also a talented cook, having learned from a professional Chinese chef, and was especially known for her elaborate culinary creations—from lavish Chinese New Year feasts and elegant dinner parties to festive trays of homemade Christmas cookies she delighted in sharing with friends and neighbors.
After David’s death, Jennie volunteered as a bookkeeper at a church in Chinatown, where she found both purpose and a caring community. When maintaining the family home became too difficult, she moved to Flushing, Queens, in early 2006. There, she enjoyed nearly a decade of active, independent living and made many new friends. She was deeply involved in the Chinese Christian Herald Crusades—not only attending their programs and forming cherished friendships but also generously supporting their mission. On Sundays, she worshiped at the Chinese for Christ New York Church.
In 2015, she relocated to Independence Manor at Hunterdon in Flemington, New Jersey—an assisted living facility—to be closer to her daughter, Jangie. Jennie quickly embraced the community, joining morning exercise classes, enjoying Saturday movie afternoons, attending worship services, and enthusiastically playing Bingo!
In 2020, her son Daniel and daughter-in-law Lisa arranged for 24-hour care at Independence Manor, ensuring she had companionship and support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jennie—and her family—are deeply grateful for the loving care provided by her aides, Elvira and May. Affectionately called “PoPo,” she was beloved by both staff and residents.
In June 2025, she entered Hunterdon Hospice. She passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at the age of 93. A lifelong and faithful Christian, Jennie began each day in prayer for her family and friends. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband on August 16—the date of their wedding anniversary.
Jennie is survived by her children, Jangie (Ed), Angie (David), and Daniel (Lisa); six grandchildren—Susan (Fabian), Sharon (Philip), Nicholas (Beverly), Alexandra (David), Sophia, and Ethan—and one great-grandchild, Naomi. She will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and unwavering love.
